I know…losts of Oscar nominations and what have we, but damn “Precious” is one God-awful movie…it’s…really reeeaally bad. In fact…I can honestly say, it’s one of the worst movies I’ve ever watched.
I’ve only walked out from a movie once (Roberto Benigni’s “Johnny Stecchino”), but I came real close to leave the cinema untimely once again…It’s horrific!
Found this short plot description:
Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want. She’s pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother (Mo’Nique), a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write.
Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an inchoate but unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her. Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One. Precious doesn’t know the meaning of “alternative,” but her instincts tell her this is the chance she has been waiting for. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient yet firm Ms. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.
So then…what makes it so bad. Well…
1. The “good” characters are portrayed as being almost saints…Heck…the lighting in the scenes with the “good” characters is what you’d expect from a candle light dinner scene from The Bold and the Beautiful.
2. The “bad” characters are REALLY bad…like…absurdly bad and evil…charcatures.
3. It’s 2 hours of emotional porn…nothing more….Or…that’s how it’s was meant…I didn’t feel anything watching this joke.
4. It’s a horrible mix of “The Dead Poets Society”, “Dangerous Minds”, “Mr. Hollands Opus”, “Awakenings”…100 episodes of “The Oprah Winfrey Show”and every single episode of “My Little Pony“.
5. The screenwriter thinks you’re a dumb ass…after a while you feel like screaming…”I GET IT! I GET IT!…HORRIBLE LIFE!!! BAD LIFE! BAD! TEACHER GOOD!!! GOOD!”
Anyway…don’t wanna spend another second on that movie…it’s already cost me almost 2 hours of my life…two hours I’ll never get back…two hours I could have spent better suffering in agonizing pain…caught a bear trap. Avoid the movie at all cost!
Bonus: Why I Hated Precious…

You forgot another thing: Juno!
It’s Juno with a black family, in an opposite bad way.
They sux the same.
And what do both say to american people? Because they ARE movies to “throw reality” in north american people’s face.. They say to them: “reality sux.. our people sux.. but that’s normal.. that’s ok.. just pretend you care but then ignore it ‘coz in real, that will never happens to your family… maybe to your poor neighbor… but not you… but we need to pretend we care and do movies like that, so everyone else won’t think we are so bad and will envy us to say ‘the truth’ about us without shame.”!
I heard someone saying a really interesting thing about this movie: “Precious is Oprah’s try to show she doesn’t care about all the hundreds dollar bags and foots and notebooks that she sells under her name… and saying she really knows from where she is.”.
So he said: “Don’t fuck! We very know from where you are and where you don’t wanna be again neither if your millionaire life depends of it. You can be a good person, but throw that in our face, in a minimum level, is a big hypocrisy!”
I am with him.
Thanks for the warning - and thanks for mentioning “The Dead Poets Society”, which is on my top-5 list of awful movies.
Hi there Hanike
The quote about Oprah is spot on I think…
Steen: Yup…DPS kinda sucks too!
In response to Tera’s post - THANK YOU!
You completely echoed my thoughts.
Why on earth did they put that poor child with down syndrome in the movie when she was going to be in a verbally abusive scene? How is she to understand that it is “make believe”? What were they thinking?! Poor judgement. Poor poor judgement on the part of the film makers and the parents of that little girl.
I am so angry to know that Gabby Sidibe is nominated for a BEST ACTRESS Academy Award! I mean - what?! Why?! It’s CRAZY! The only thing she did was “look the part”. She is black, obese, and can pass for a teen. That’s IT! She looked the part and can regurgitate lines and that is enough to be nominated in the same category as Sandra Bullock and Meryl Streep? I think NOT! WHat a f-ing joke.
As for Monique - I don’t know her personally but from what I have seen in interviews - she is annoying as hell, I can not stand her - so ya, she did well in the part because she got to be pissed off a lot and that is her specialty.
Overall - a huge disappointment.Thanks a lot Oprah.
